Paddle For A Purpose: Saluting the Kentucky River

In our fourth year of our annual Paddle for a Purpose event, we’re doing things a little different.

When flooding upended the lives of thousands in the Lower Kentucky River Watershed in April, it also damaged several locks and dams, changing the way boaters are able navigate the river—and the way Paddle for a Purpose can take place.

Join Woods and Waters Land Trust two Sunday afternoons for an event that’s part-paddle, part-festivity, and part-education:

* Sunday, September 28, BYOB (boat!) to Pool 1 in Carrollton for a paddle through this more remote section of the Kentucky River.

* SATURDAY, October 25, meet us and Canoe Kentucky in Frankfort for a paddle that winds through downtown. BYOB, or rent a canoe or kayak from our partner Canoe Kentucky.

Some of the things you’ve always loved about Paddle for a Purpose are unchanged! We’ll still have riverside educators talking about the rich ecology and history of this area. And of course we’ll have food and fun at the After-Paddle Parties, free and open to the public.

Paddlers of all experience levels are invited for these flat-water excursions!

All Paddle for a Purpose proceeds benefit Woods and Waters Land Trust, with thanks to Canoe Kentucky for the generous support they offer, on and off the water, to make this event happen.

Paddle for a Purpose has always given us an excuse to gather and enjoy the power and wonder of the Kentucky River. We’re using this year’s event to also reflect on the respect and conservation that the river requires from all of us living alongside and interacting with it. Please join us to salute this vital and treasured community resource!

Paddle for a Purpose is just one opportunity for you to experience the Kentucky River with us this fall!

The Boathouse at River Row, a historic structure on the banks of the Kentucky River in South Frankfort, was gifted to Woods and Waters Land Trust in 2024. We use it as a boat launch and storage service as well as a venue for connecting people with the river. Stay connected with us on Facebook and Instagram and through our newsletter to learn about Boathouse happenings.
