Ways to Give

Here are some ways to give you may not have considered – that benefit you and support conserving the beauty and function of our landscape.

Donation of stock

If you are selling stock and will have to pay capital gains taxes when you do, you can reduce or avoid this cost by giving the stock to a charity (like Woods and Waters Land Trust). You can then deduct the full value of the stock from your taxes as a charitable donation and do NOT add the capital gain to your income (or pay tax on it). Then the charity (like WWLT) can sell the stock for the full value too!  Win. Win.

IRA

You are required to start taking funds out of your IRA/401K at age 70 ½ years. But this will add to your taxable income (so you will pay more tax).  If you donate the amount you are required to take out of your IRA to a charity (like Woods and Waters Land Trust), you will not have to claim this as income (or pay tax on it!). This donation must go directly from your IRA to the charity. Your gift will provide the community a future with a beautiful and healthy Bluegrass landscape.

Wills and Bequeaths

You know that you want to leave a legacy of support for conserving our beautiful Bluegrass rivers and forests. You can add WWLT as a beneficiary to your IRA, your insurance or your will.  This could be a dollar amount or maybe it’s some land or other property that you know your family doesn’t need or want.

And you may not want to wait.  You may have seen the gift John Downard gave to WWLT recently – a few acres of land north of Frankfort.  He no longer wanted to pay property tax on this land and transferred it to WWLT as a tax donation in the spirit of supporting land conservation.
